Hi. My name is Sue and I was diagnosed in July this year. I have been started on Methotrexate, Sulfasalazine and Hydroxychloroquine as well as six weeks of a reducing course of steroids. The steroids have now stopped and the other meds are at maximum dosage. I am struggling with a terrible metallic taste all the time and food and fluids are a bit of a struggle. I wonder if this is normal and also will it settle?

Hi Sue, and welcome to the forum - though sorry you have become a member of the "RA Club!"

I have been on two of the drugs you are on - MTX and SLZ - and certainly the MTX affected my taste buds. There were some foods I simply could not tolerate at all, which pre-MTX I enjoyed. Also, I can identify with the metallic taste in the mouth - I used to use a minty-flavoured mouth wash, if I remember rightly. MTX and SLZ didn`t work out for me, and once I had come off the MTX I regained my normal appetite for all the foods I`d enjoyed in the past.

If you were diagnosed in July I suspect it may take a while longer to assimilate the drugs, and for your body to get used to them. If things don`t settle down you could perhaps speak to your rheumy nurse, or whoever is monitoring your bloods, and see what they advise.

Take care,

Kathleen x

Hi Sue

Hello and welcome and although it's nice to meet you I sorry it's due to RA.

I was just diagnosed in March and am on Metho, Hydroxy but tailed off the steroids about 6 weeks ago. I still sometimes get a strange taste in my mouth and always find the a few days after taking the metho I cannot tolerate big meals. I would ask advice from your Rheumatology Team as perhaps the mix of meds you are on is not for you. I am sure they will have suggestions and please let us know how you get on.

Take care.

Thank you for your replies. It is helpful to know that other people out there are in the same boat, not that I would wish this on anybody! I am sure this is a drug related issue and that I ought to give it a bit longer, I see the Rheumy nurse mid September so I will see what she has to say.

Hi Sue

One of the side effects of certain RA drugs is their effect on the taste buds and on the digestive system generally. It is common to find that some foods produce a metallic taste in the mouth and some can no longer be tolerated at all. Unfortunate if it is something that you particularly like though! At the end of the day it is better to have the RA drugs that are actually doing their job and controlling what can become rampant disease and changing your eating habits as necessary.

I find strong tasting foods and spicy foods intolerable so avoid these at all costs. It does limit eating out sometimes but is a small price to pay in my opinion. Hope things settle down for you very soon.

My son, Ian, completed the BUPA Great North Run on 15th September running for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS). You can read his story at http://www.justgiving.com/ianlukewilson
